Tranquil Finistere

by  Rosemary Boyce

Favourite haunts are very personal places and over the years we have accumulated quite a few around Europe.

Not least and one we return to regularly languishes in the department of Finistere in Brittany’s most north westerly corner. In a ‘far from the madding crowd’ environment you find Camping des Abers at Landeda, situated between the Aber Wrac’h and Aber Benoit at the point of the Sainte-Marguerite peninsula.

We didn’t just happen to discover this area, it was the owners of this exceptional campsite Vera and Hubert Le Cuff, who extended an invitation after meeting up at a Camping Cheque conference in Italy.

How fortunate were we, for not only did we find ourselves in an area of France unscathed by over development and tourism, easy accessibility was a bonus. We sailed with Brittany Ferries from Cork to Roscoff and after a short 60km drive on quiet and virtually traffic free roads we were soon on site soaking up instant tranquillity and views that never fail to impress.

Camping des Abers enjoys an idyllic location spread over a protected site. The undulating terrain of this campsite overlooks an excellent sandy beach and a scattering of tiny islands which can be reached on foot when the tide is out.

Getting out and about soon unfolds the natural delights of what is known as the “Coast of Legends” and “Pays des Abers”, the Breton phrase for “estuary country”. You can expect to discover an unusual coastline heritage and fascinating sites from sea-wrack ovens to the lighthouses and beacons known as “the sentinels of the sea”. Impressive too is Fort Cezon a stronghold built in 1694 and the photographers favourite Meneham, an original old village.

What makes our annual visit to Camping des Abers so special is the hospitality and welcome accorded by Vera and Hubert. They run their campsite impeccably with emphasis on entertaining their guests whether it is low season or high season. Their combined musical talents and artistic skills guarantee a memorable holiday.
