Tolo, a neat little seaside resort, is found in the Peloponnese, about an hours drive south of the Corinth Canal and just a few minutes from Nafplio. There is a sandy beach at the end of which is ancient Asini, a Bronze Age village from where ships sailed to siege ancient Troy. Tolo is a great place to stay with plenty to do to suit all tastes. Laze on the beach for a golden tan, hire a pedalo, or snorkel in the bay to see the pretty fish close up and maybe catch an octopus.
At the other end of town is a small fishing port from where almost daily cruises take tourists to the islands of Spetses and Hydra. In the evening the main street comes alive with tavernas and music bars. The tavernas offer a variety of fresh fish for your evening meal, from Octopus to Swordfish, all simple but delicious dishes. Or you can choose the traditional Tzatziki, Greek salad with Feta cheese followed by Mousaka.
Stay at the Hotel Aris or Hotel Artemis or the small friendly family run Hotel Arkadia, all opening right onto the narrow beach close to the centre of the town.
For campers choose Camping Asini Beach, a shady site with beach frontage, or Sunset Camping closer to the town.
The local bus service is easy to negotiate for a day at the market in Nafplio, which was the first capital city of Greece. At a café in the central square relax with the Greeks over a coffee or a light lunch before exploring the labyrinth of narrow streets with little shops selling everything from fifties hardware to modern artistic crafts.
In Nafplio, visit the archaeological museum full of rich treasures of this historic region and take another bus to the outskirts of the town to marvel at the fortified Bronze Age palace of Tyrins, thought to be the home of Hercules. There are regular buses to get you back to Tolo for your evening meal.
