The Alhambra

by  Sandy & Noel Read

How many millions of words have been written about the Alhambra? Despite reading so many of them we were nowhere near prepared for this wonderful place. The weather, in May last year, was not good – in fact the day of our visit started horribly. There was sleet and driving rain in the hills to the west of the city where we were staying. By the time we arrived in Granada it was still very dull and overcast.

We had been warned that pre-booking (a certain proportion of the tickets can be pre-booked) or early arrival (7am) was essential and this may be the case in high season. However, on arrival (easy parking in numerous well signed areas) we enquired at the office on site and the very helpful multi- lingual staff told us an afternoon visit was possible. They also advised us to pay by card at a bank of machines just round the corner from the very, very long queues of cash payers.  Many didn’t seem to be aware of this facility, and if you are willing to pay by card it certainly saves a great deal of time.

The receipt/ticket gives a time for entry into the palaces. Access to the Alcazaba (fort), the Generalife and the park is not time related other than being am or pm, so you can structure your visit accordingly. In whichever order you view this fantastic place you will be amazed by its design, workmanship, beautiful gardens and tremendous views over the city and beyond.

Only two things could have improved this experience for us- blue skies and staying in the wonderfully sited Parador in the grounds. Waking up there with the prospect of spending the day exploring the Alhambra and the rest of Granada, a vibrant and interesting city, must be a great feeling. Perhaps next time!
