Libourne, on the lower reaches of the Dordogne river is the port from which Boedeaux wines are still shipped. It is a large bastide town with an attractive arcaded square and an interesting port area. We stayed at the Hotel La Tour du Vieux Port. We stayed in the hotel Annex which was a ‘boutique’ created from a old Port Gate House. It was situated across the road from the river and was within easy walking distance of the town and station. We caught the train to Bordeaux for the day from here. The market day, held in the large town square and surrounding roads, changed the whole atmosphere. We’ve also stayed at Le Vatel Ganhoff Hotel. at Arveyres, a village south-west of Libourne that’s situated just below the N89 dual carriageway where it becomes the A89; we were unsure if we wanted to stay there, but needed a night-stop. Anyway, we were rewarded with a supper of very good steaks cooked on the open grill, fired by bundles of brush wood, brought in by the waitress !!!
