Le Grau d'Agde

by  Clive & Lois Edwards

Le Grau d’Agde is a fishing village, and tiny resort, situated at the mouth of the River Herault. It’s about 3 miles downstream from the old city of Agde, and about the same distance from the modern resort of Cap d’Agde. “Le Grau” as it’s known locally is rather pretty with a nice beach facing the sea, and a quayside running along the banks of the Herault. On the opposite side of the river, accessible by a ferry (passengers and cyclists only) is the small resort of Le Tamarissiere.

The village of Le Grau features a regular street market in the small square, as well as the nice beach, but it’s the quayside at Le Grau that’s probably its most attractive feature, with a range of popular restaurants with terraces bordering the river. Our particular favourite is Le Pergola, which always seems to have an interesting menu, with a choice of essentially French dishes at a reasonable price. Lois and I eat there quite often, along with our two Westies (how nice that most French restaurants still welcome dogs!) to the extent that Le Pergola’s management took to reserving our table in the names of “George et Gaby” our two Westies – Sadly Gaby is no longer with us, but George’s young niece, Alix, is with us now and has been given a similar welcome.
