Delights of Luxembourg

by  Rosemary Boyce

A long time favourite, Luxembourg draws us back from time to time. This small country boasts a lush and varied landscape, numerous hill top castles, a unique and influential capital, delightful villages and famous Moselle vineyards, plus it is caravanning friendly.

A recent visit found us back at Camping Kohnenhof, a recommended TopCamp site at Obereisenbach in the district of Clervaux. Everything about this campsite appeals, from its picturesque setting along the banks of the River Our, over which you could throw a stone to the German bank, even reach it by the campsite raft.

Kohnenhof is well known for its highly organised Golf trips and top class facilities, including a gourmet restaurant “Auberge Kohnenhof” run by Maurice Keizers and Ruud Kemp who serve exceptional cuisine.

The restaurant’s distinctive situation on the roadside fronting the campsite draws not only campsite guests, it is popular with the locals. In a relaxed and tastefully decorated environment you are spoilt for choice with various seasonal specialities included in the menu.

A memorable evening meal for us included a delicious starter of tiger shrimps and melon balls topped with a sesame crisp, a main course of thinly sliced filet of beef with asparagus, spinach and morilles. Not least for dessert we tucked into white chocolate parfait with forest fruits, followed by coffee and an after dinner chocolate.

Luxembourg not only appeals because of its compactness, fuel costs a lot less here and it is easily accessible from the ports of Calais, Ostend or Zeebrugge.  We choose to get there from Ireland by sailing with Norfolkline from Belfast to Liverpool and from Hull to Zeebrugge with P&O. It was then no more than a 200 mile toll free drive to Camping Kohnenhof.
