If you’re a keen driver, this is a “must” – both for the experience, and for the spectacular views. The Col du Turini has been a Monte Carlo Rally stage for as long as anyone can remember, and I’ve driven it four times myself on the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique – usually in the middle of the night during January, when, hard to believe, there are hundreds of spectators camped out in the most amazing situations clinging to the rock faces, with fires & bar-b-qs ablaze – a truly memorable sight!
Even in daylight it’s impressive - start at the very attractive old town of Sospel with its old houses lining the banks of the river which is crossed by a 11th century bridge. The Place St Michel features arcaded houses and a 17th century former cathedral. Now simply follow the D2566 road through Moulinet, round literally dozens of hairpins clinging to the rock faces over the Col, and then on to Luceram, with its pretty streets clinging to the mountainside, and then to l’Escarene - bear in mind that rally drivers have to do this by night in the middle of an Alpine winter....
