City of Contrast

by  John Parsons & Pat Taylor

The A68 from England to Scotland is a good if challenging road for a caravanner, but the spectacular vistas and historic towns add to the feeling of history of this once much fought-over land.

A day bus ticket for £2.50 takes you from the excellent Caravan Club campsite on the edge of the Firth of Forth into Edinburgh.  And what a contrast – modern designer shopping in Princes Street and architecturally delightful little shops in hidden alleyways around the Royal Mile.  Above all is the ancient castle with its commanding view over the city – floodlit at dusk as a piper played a haunting lament. The adjacent Camera Obscura visual image exhibition is fascinating and there are many more sights and places of interest that you will need more than just one day.  At this time of year, the city is bright with festive lights and alive with bustling markets.
