Avignon lies about 100km north-west of Marseilles, and situated on the Rhone, Avignon is fascinating and charming town which has held an important place in French history Here in the 14th century, in the huge “Palace des Papes” was the home of the Pope, celebrated today by the famous local “Chateauneuf-du-Pape” wine.
The philosopher, John Stuart Mill is buried in the St Veran cemetery - also famous for it’s ancient 12th century bridge (Le Pont d’Avignon) one of the first bridges over the Rhone. There’s much to see and do, including the Cathedral, the Calvert Museum and the views over the Rhone to Mont Ventoux from the Rochers des Doms.
